Surface Notes VI is an original contemporary abstract artwork created from layered recycled paper and hand stitching. Part of the Surface Notes series, the piece explores rhythm, surface and interruption through horizontal bands of colour and thread.
Soft washes of sea green and blue move across narrow paper strips, building a calm, shifting field of colour that suggests water, horizon lines or distant landscape forms. The layered structure introduces subtle tonal variation, allowing the surface to feel fluid rather than fixed.
Across these horizontal bands, passages of black stitching punctuate the composition. These stitched sections act as graphic accents within the softer colour fields, creating moments of contrast and visual rhythm. Their irregular placement introduces a sense of movement and variation, drawing the eye slowly across the work.
The interplay between painted paper and thread places the work somewhere between painting, textile and drawing. From a distance the piece reads as a calm abstract composition, while closer viewing reveals the tactile detail of layered paper and hand-stitched marks.
With its cool palette and structured format, Surface Notes VI works beautifully in modern interiors including coastal homes, minimalist spaces and contemporary Australian interiors. The subtle contrast of the dark stitching adds depth while maintaining the quiet, balanced feel of the piece.
