Surface Notes III is an original abstract artwork made from layered recycled paper and hand stitching. This piece continues the Surface Notes series’ exploration of rhythm, surface and subtle disruption through thread.
Soft washes of blue drift across horizontal paper bands, creating a sense of mist, tide or distant horizon. The tonal transitions feel fluid and atmospheric, shifting between pale sky tones and deeper ocean blue. Across this field, stitched segments appear in uneven intervals - sometimes clustered, sometimes isolated - like fragments of signal moving across water.
The horizontal structure suggests calm and repetition, yet the variations in stitch density and placement introduce movement and pause. Nothing is rigid. The work holds a balance between openness and interruption, surface and depth.
Made using reclaimed materials, the layered paper creates quiet texture, while the stitching adds tactile contrast without overwhelming the composition. The surrounding white space allows the cooler tones to breathe, giving the piece a light yet grounded presence.
