Surface Notes IV - Abstract Paper & Stitch Artwork

Surface Notes IV is an original abstract artwork constructed from layered recycled paper and hand stitching. Part of the Surface Notes series, the work explores rhythm, repetition and subtle interruption across a quiet, horizontal field.

Soft washes of sea green and muted teal move across narrow paper bands, creating a gentle sense of tide, mist or distant horizon. The colour shifts are fluid and organic, allowing the surface to feel calm and atmospheric rather than rigid or graphic.

Across this layered field, sections of hand stitching appear at irregular intervals. These stitched passages move across the composition like quiet markers - sometimes clustered, sometimes isolated - introducing moments of density and pause within the otherwise open rhythm of the piece.

The horizontal structure suggests repetition and continuity, while the slight variations in colour, spacing and stitch placement keep the surface alive with movement. Created using reclaimed materials and hand stitching, the artwork carries a tactile quality that becomes more visible on closer inspection. When framed, the surrounding white space allows the soft colour palette and stitched elements to breathe, giving the piece a calm yet contemporary presence.
