Variegated 9 is part of Jennifer Bell’s ongoing Variegated series - a collection of abstract works inspired by the intricate natural designs found at the microscopic level of leaves, such as the delicate structure of stomata. In this piece, Bell translates that scientific precision into a decorative, meditative artwork. Layers of rich ultramarine and cobalt blue are accented with hand-cut paper elements that shimmer subtly as they catch the light.
The lace-like pattern appears cellular and organic, reminiscent of both microscopic life and textile design, offering the viewer multiple ways to interpret its quiet complexity. At once soothing and visually engaging, the painting celebrates both the order and randomness found in nature. The rhythmic repetition of shapes creates a calming energy, perfect for interiors that value balance and beauty.
With its compact square format, Variegated 9 is ideal for smaller spaces, adding a vibrant pop of blue and a thoughtful sense of detail. Whether displayed alone or paired with others from the Variegated series, it evokes a sense of curiosity and quiet contemplation.
